Lalla Essaydi is a particularly interesting Moroccan artist who focuses on the role of women in the Islamic world. The series, Les Femmes du Maroc (2005-7), explores the rhetoric behind the veiling of women. I recently saw one of her pieces, La Grande Odalisque, in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, in their new exhibit on Islamic Art. I like the way she juxtaposes calligraphy, which is a predominantly male art in the islamic world, and henna which has feminine connotations in order to make a point about islamic women. She will be in Richmond today (November 2, 2017) for the Hamad bin Symposium on Islamic Art.
